Dispense a pump on your face and apply with your fingers for the best results. You can use a brush or a sponge, but for buildable coverage, it’s best to use your fingers.

jane iredale Beyond Matte Liquid Foundation Review:

I did two separate applications of this foundation because I wanted to love it so badly. Luckily, the second application was just what I needed to figure out the trick to it. The first time around I applied it with a wet sponge. Unfortunately, I tried to rush the process, which resulted in coverage that was cakier than I would like. For someone who likes full-coverage foundations, this might not be a problem, but I like semi-sheer and natural looks. I also prefer a foundation that’s very quick and easy to apply, without spending forever in front of the mirror blending.

Just when I was about to resign this foundation to special occasions only, I decided to give the application a go with my fingers. Pat McGrath famously uses her fingers because the heat provides extra emollience and foundation glides on.

“You can also use your fingertips to blend the foundation to help it settle into the skin in a natural way,” she revealed. “The heat from your fingertips polishes the foundation and gives a translucent finish that is impossible to create using sponges or puffs.”

Fingers also give a lot more foundation application control. This is the application technique I needed in order for me to give this bottle of clean, wholesome ingredients my big stamp of approval.

The foundation touts itself as a primer, concealer, and foundation in one bottle. So, naturally, I skipped the primer and concealer. It does provide excellent coverage since my undereye circles disappeared. You can see in the photos that my extremely dark “I’ve had too much screen time” under-eyes got concealed with the foundation.

The texture was perfect for my normal/combination skin. I’m generally not into matte foundations, but this one is buildable enough to ensure the finish is somewhere between natural and matte. If you’re looking for a fully matte finish that looks like you just dipped your face in powder, this might not be for you.

It also has some impressive staying power. In fact, it’s so impressive that I’m still unable to get a little splash out of my pants. I tried everything, and it absolutely will not budge. It also took me double cleansing in order to get the face nice and clean after wearing it all day.
