A study published in July 2013 Phytotherapy Research provided first clinical evidence that curcumin, which is found in the spice turmeric or in curry blends, is close to efficacy in treating depression as fluoxetine (commonly known as Prozac). 

The anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin aid in the formation of new brain cells, which in turn raise levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. The study author Ajay Goel, PhD, also gives the indication that the spice may help alleviate short-term mood swings. The best part about all this? Using the spice does not expose you to the side effects that come with manufactured drugs, such as fluoxetine.

So add some turmeric to your life, or a curcumin supplement from your health food store. The study used 1000mg of daily curcumin for it’s results with Major Depressive Disorder. The health effects extend beyond just brain health. It’s helpful for reducing symptoms of arthritis, bloating, stomach pain, headaches as well as liver and gallbladder problems.
