NYFW FW16 Day 1 Recap: Best of the Runway

Day one of NYFW is done, and I’m already exhausted. I love the energy of the season, but this week of February is always brutally cold in the city. Somehow, we got flanked by warm weather leading up to fashion week, and then after fashion week ends it goes up to high 40s and even a day in the 50s. During fashion week the weather maintains nice, frigid numbers in the 20s and low 30s, with plenty of bone-chilling winds. Anyone remember last season and Eva Chen’s double coat? It’s double-coat time again.

There are plenty of days to go still, but here’s the rundown of currently emerging trends:

  • Plenty of velvet so far
  • Flared pants still going strong
  • Paneled, slit, skirts
  • Plenty of slinky fabrics mixed with stiffer counterparts
  • Split sleeves
  • Elongated sleeves
  • Menswear inspired- long button down shirt dresses

Velvet is the biggest fabric to watch at the moment. That’s the biggest thing that stood out to me yesterday at NYFW kick-off show Nicholas K and the rest of the shows followed suit.
