8 Anti Aging Skincare Habits for Younger Looking Skin

8 anti aging skincare habits

Beautiful skin starts within, but there are steps you can take to help the process along. There are a few fundamentals, like applying SPF and drinking plenty of water. But what about beyond that? Sure, the stars say it comes down to those simple tricks, but they also have an arsenal of doctors and wellness practitioners around them at all times. These anti aging skincare habits will get you on the lifestyle path of the stars to get your skin glowing and looking ageless.

1. Identify Your Skin Type

So how oily is your skin? Get a little closer to identifying it by looking at the T-zone. Although wrinkles aren’t as prominent on oily skin, regular deep cleaning is needed to maintain proper pores. The time of day it starts shining dictates how greasy it is. If by mid-morning your T-zone looks slick, it’s very oily. If it remains dry through the afternoon, it’s less oily than you might have thought.

First thing in the morning, run a tissue all over your face. If it’s clean without oil on it, your skin is normal. If there are traces of oil, the oily areas of your face will be ‘revealed.’ If there are no traces of oil on the tissue, BUT your face feels dry, you have dry skin. Adjust your skin routine accordingly!

2. Steam Your Skin

This real gem of a tip spans generations. Bring water to a simmer, and place your head over the basin to let the steam penetrate your pores. Be sure to drape a towel over the mini ‘spa space.’ If it feels too hot, however, back away a bit from the source.

Why let go of something that works so well, so quickly, and free? This is also a great decongestant!

3. Do an Ice Massage

Want to calm inflamed skin, reduce acne, refresh skin, slow formation of wrinkles, and minimize the appearance of pores? Ice your face! Kate Moss does it too!

No, seriously. Wrap an ice cube in a piece of tissue or muslin cloth and massage your face with it until the ice cube melts. Make this your nightly ritual to notice vast improvements in your skin tone. The cold massage helps slow oil production and calms the skin, resulting in less harrowing acne.

Another added benefit of an ice massage? Doing it before a makeup application helps the makeup stay on longer!

4. Moisturize

Your skin starts to dehydrate three minutes after bathing or washing it. Apply any moisturizer within three minutes until still lightly damp skin to seal in the moisture!

Want softer skin all over your body? Leave on your moisturizing body wash for a few extra minutes in the shower instead of rinsing it off right away. This will give it time to sink in and do what it’s supposed to: MOISTURIZE!

5. Trick Yourself to Drink More Water

Beautiful clear skin can always be achieved by drinking plenty of water and minimizing exposure to radicals. No matter how much you want to change your skin radically RIGHT NOW, you won’t be able to tackle problems individually and keep them at bay without a strong foundation for skincare.

If you can’t fathom drinking water randomly throughout the day, consider getting an herbal tea, which will not only allow you to raise your water intake, but also give your body plenty of anti-oxidants to work with!

6. Avoid Sugar

According to a 2013 study, “higher glucose levels are associated with a higher perceived age.” In the study, the perceived age of adults 50-70 was measured against their glucose levels. Those with higher blood sugar looked older physically. Instead of consuming added sugar, opt for fruit as your sweet treat. Make anything sweet a treat and not a regular occurrence in your lifestyle.

7. Say No to Alcohol

No, not just the type that you can drink, but also alcohol in your skincare products. These tend to dry out the skin and exacerbate more issues. If you’re already regularly using SPF, you’ll be surprised to find that many gels and creams contain alcohol in their formula. Make sure to check the label and avoid this skin irritant. Hydrating your skin with the right ingredients ensures it keeps its glow.

8. Don’t Skip the Retinoids

If you still don’t have a retinoid solidly embedded in your skincare routine, now is the time to start. Luckily, there are now retinol alternatives on the market, which cause significantly decreased irritation. An excellent option is The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2%, which is one of the best-priced selections for long term results.

Make it a habit to apply the retinol several times a week in the evenings, and make sure to use plenty of SPF during the daytime to reduce any adverse effects.
